Review – Grain Free Greenies

Blue Belle Reviews Grain Free Greenies

Blue Belle was excited to see a box arrive at the door.  She always thinks all boxes coming to our door are for her.  This time she was correct.  We received a box from Chewy.com.

The product for our review was a new product, Grain Free Greenies.  The 12 oz. bag of petite greenies was not exactly what I requested.  The petite greenies are treats for 15 – 25 lb. dogs.  Blue Belle is closer to 50 lbs.  So, basically one treat is gobbled up in less than a minute.

We have always liked Greenies, but I wanted to test this new grain free type of Greenies because  Blue Belle has had digestive problems for several months and after various  attempts to figure out what we needed to change in her diet, we decided to place her on grain free food and that has been a great solution.

We do like the Grain Free Greenies, I think next time I will get the regular size.  Greenies dental chews are good for oral health.  We do recommend Greenies, but as the product packaging says “As with any edible product, monitor your dog to ensure the treat is adequately chewed.  Gulping any item can be harmful or even fatal to a dog.”  Oh no!  I don’t want to freak out our readers, it is true that we want to make sure our dogs are safely ingesting everything they eat, including treats.  I will make sure Blue Belle chews adequately.

Disclaimer:  I received these goodies free of charge from Chewy.com  in exchange for my honest review. This is where you can find Grain Free Greenies at Chewy.com

What you should consider before buying Toys for Chihuahuas

We all want to give our dogs the best food, treats and toys that money can buy. But sometimes we’re not sure where to start. You might find yourself confused about what the right toys are when you’re a new dog owner. This applies for every breed but in this case, we’re talking about Chihuahuas.

As a parent to a brand new Chihuahua puppy, you want to start spoiling them right away. You want to get the best toys for them so that they can meet all their chewing needs.

But don’t go shopping for toys for your Chihuahua before you learn about the best toys for them. They’re little dogs but as puppies they can chew like any other breed. Here you will find everything you need to know before buying toys for Chihuahuas.  All your Chihuahua’s needs and what qualities to look for in a toy are right here.

Teething and Chewing

Chihuahua puppies love to chew but they aren’t the only ones. Even adult Chihuahuas enjoy chewing. Chi puppies start teething at around the age of 4 months. The reason for their need to chew is because they’re gums are itchy. They’re gums itch because they’re baby teeth are getting lose and their adult teeth are coming in.

It’s so important to have adequate toys for your Chi pup to chew on to relieve their discomfort. If you don’t provide good toys for them they’ll turn to chewing everything else in sight. This includes furniture, shoes and anything else they can get their paws on.

Below are some factors to consider before buying, courtesy of Petchidog.com.

Well-Known Secret Behind Pet Stores

Please join me in welcoming a guest blog post by Dayton Uttinger who informs us about the new law being discussed in the New Jersey Legislature.  If enacted, it will prevent pet stores from buying animals from “mills”, only from rescue and adoption shelters.

Thank you, Dayton, for your article. – Julie

The Well-Known Secret Behind Pet Stores

By: Dayton Uttinger

Happy puppy

There are few things that excite a household more than bringing home a new puppy.  Everyone crowds around the new addition to the family. Some are eager for attention, others withdraw into the arms of whoever’s carrying them, but they are all small and fragile, no matter how large they’re destined to grow later.  However, depending on the dog’s origin, dangerous health problems can develop with time, especially if it came from a puppy mill.

Puppy mills have long been the bane of animal rights advocates.  Although 62% of American households own at least one dog, and we all tend to treat them like family, we don’t always investigate where they’re coming from.  We figure that we’ll be giving our pet all the love that they deserve, so really, we’re rescuing an animal from a puppy mill when we buy from a chain store, right?

Can you imagine how you would feel if you learned your dog was going blind? Sadly, Our friends Brett and Hillary are dealing with this heartbreaking ordeal in their family. We have known Hillary since she was a young girl and were thrilled to see her get married to her loving husband and bring into their family two cute little Boston Terrier Dogs, Gin and Tonic. We recently heard that 3 year old Gin needs cataract surgery. Poor little Gin wants to play with her brother, Tonic, like she used to before her eyes developed severe cataracts.

We are reaching out to our readers to ask for your help. Hillary and Brett have set up a GoFundMe page to help with the expense of the cataract surgery. Please consider a small donation. I know every little bit will help.

Our Impression

This was a difficult product to review. First of all the dad in the family was afraid to let Blue Belle give it a try. The Air Dash Frisbee seems soft enough for her to catch, but it seems very heavy. He was worried that it would hit her in the head and hurt her. Finally I was able to give it a try. Blue Belle loves to catch a ball and her soft bite floppy disc, but didn’t know what to do with this heavy frisbee. I started by telling her it was a frisbee. I threw the Air Dash Frisbee into the yard several times and she just let it go and didn’t even go after it. I showed it to her again and told her to pick it up and bring it to me. She finally understood that it was something she could play with. Success – she caught it and brought it back.  But she doesn’t really play with it, because she loves her pink floppy disc flyer.

The Zogoflex Air Dash Frisbee by West Paw is very sturdy and all of their claims do appear to be true.

Is your Paint Pet Safe?

Guest Blogger:  Aedan Kiernan

As pet owners we are all very careful about the food and toys we give to our pets, and what we do around them, which could be detrimental to their health. We are all aware of the dangers of things like chocolate, not many pet owners are aware of health implications that domestic decorating products like paints can have on our furry friends.

The Danger of Paints

Paint might not seem like the most dangerous household substances, but some domestic paints can have serious implications on the health and wellbeing of our pets. These paints are so harmful due to the harsh chemicals that they contain, which includes solvents, heavy metals and VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). These chemicals release gases which can cause serious harm to our pets when they are inhaled. Although these gases are most potent while paints are drying, fumes can still be released long after the paint has dried. While the full extent of the damage caused by these chemicals is unknown, symptoms include dizziness, irritation to skin, eyes and air ways and in extreme cases full bodily hair loss.

Paints are not the only decorating product which can cause harm to our pets. Some other hazardous products include varnishes, paint removers and white spirits. The dangers are not just limited to inhalation of these gases and pets can suffer from the same symptoms if they ingest paints or other decorating products. Continue reading
